The present-day church is built on the site of the ancient basilica founded in 997 by Teuzone, Bishop of Reggio, to house the relics of the city’s Patron Saint, inside the walls of the Bishop’s fort. The ancient basilica was smaller than today’s and faced east, in accordance with early Christian tradition.
